Abstract
:
The maturity stages of Rhabdosargus haffara are divided into six stages: Immature, Developing, Maturing, Mature, Spawning and Spent. The variation in the average GSI of female and male peaks in December and January with the maximum value in Mature and Spawning stages. Plasma estradiol-17B level in females was positively correlated with GSI and shows an increase with the maturation of ovaries reaching the maximum level (7.65 +/- 0.89 ng ml(-1)) during the mature stage. While it is slightly decreased in the spawning stage yet it is still high. In males it shows a high level during maturing, mature and spawning stages. This may be involved in the sex inversion of the protandorous R. haffara. The growth and development of the ovaries and testes is associated with rising plasma Level of testosterone and its level was positively correlated with GSI. The level of testosterone is higher in females than in male. Progesterone level in female increased reaching peak level at Maturing stage after that it decreased progressively, while in males there is a positive correlation between the progesterone level and the maturity stage of testes.
