Abstract |

This study examines affective language in terms of its definition, function, and the extent of its appropriateness to carry out this function. The study builds on investigating the relation between linguistics and psychology, affective language as a concept, the most significant terms that are relevant to this concept and the relation it holds to language as one of the tools used to express human consciousness including feelings, moods and attitudes in a way that addresses and affects it to shape human behaviour in specific ways. The study also looks into the resources of affective language and organizes them into linguistic resources which include phonetic, syntactic, grammatical, semantic and stylistic resources, aesthetic and creative resources, psychological resources, in addition to body language and its role in supporting different shapes of linguistic and affective expressions. Furthermore, the study points out the most important shapes of affective language and their expressive patterns derived from its resources. It aims to explore these issues within sayings of Prophet Mohammed (Peace be Upon Him) which are considered to be in the second place after the Holy Qur’an in terms of literary power. This includes examining its functions, expressive meanings, the importance of the affective side of the language through an applied study of a selection of some of the Prophet’s sayings from Aljame Alsaheeh by Imam Bukhari. These selected texts were used to examine the levels of affective expression in Arabic. The study offers models of these texts to explain the emotional and expressive shapes that the theoretical section highlights. One of the most significant results of this study lies in suggesting the use of ‘affective language’ as a substitute for ‘emotional language’ because of its inclusion of feelings, moods and attitudes rather than feelings alone. The study additionally aims to highlight the importance of affective function of language and its presence in all its levels and aspects of talk and works to organize this to highlight one of the significantly creative aspects of Arabic in order to draw attention to its importance and call for more research into this invaluable aspect of language use. |
