Abstract |

The title of this dissertation is "The Poetic Language between Sibawayh
and Ibn Malik".The dissertation is a comparison study between the poetic
language between Sibawayh and Ibn Malik. The scope of the dissertation
focuses on a comparison between two different stages of Arabic grammar
through studying two famous scholars: Sibawayh who represents the
earlier stage of Arabic grammar and Ibn Malik who represents a later on
one. The main objective of this dissertation is to confirm that the concept
of poetic language did not appear in Sibawayh's book. Yet, it appears in
Ibn Malik's in which he proves that the distinct poet is able to manipulate
the roles of language by choice-- a matter that was named later on by the
term (poetic language). The dissertation is divided into a preface, an
introduction, three chapters, and a conclusion.
The introduction illustrates the difference between the poetic language and
the language of prose. The first chapter discuses the poetic language
between grammar and stylistic through three sup-chapters: the poetic
language of Grammarians; the poetic language of Stylists; and Encart (alinziyaah) and the poetic language. The second chapter discuses both
Sibawayh's texts of the poetic language and Ibn Malik's through two supchapters: the grammatical cases in which Ibn Malik agrees with Sibawayh;
and the other ones in which he does not. The third chapter is divided into
three sup-chapters: the concept of Sibawayh's poetic language; the concept
of Ibn-Malik's poetic language; and the relation between rhyme and meter
and the poetic language.
The study concludes many essential results such as: first, there are many
terms for poetic lines that break the language's rule such as necessity
(dharurah), distinct language for poetry (lughah khaasah bi-al-shi'r),
Encart (inziyaah), and Deviation ('udul), however, they all mean the same
thing; second, the term poetic necessity is swinging between a pure
Lexicographical meaning, i. e. need and distress, and an expanded
meaning, i. e. the poetic language; third, the concept of Sibawayh's poetic
language means giving the poet a licence to break the rules in one
condition that is to return to original text or bring up a parallel example to
it, however, Ibn Malik differentiates between necessity in poetry and the
poet's freedom in breaking rules by choic. |
