Abstract |

The present thesis studies time in al-Hariri's and al-Sarkusti’sMaqamat
based on two methods: the formal and subjective methods to include the
internal and external aspects of the text.
The formal study is based on Gerard Genette’stheory of time in
narrative texts. The study has borrowed from a translation to his theory and
applied his ways of tracking and tackling time through order, frequency,
duration, voice, and mode. The study proved that maqamat are narrative texts
that rely heavily on the discourse of time, and that it is similar to novels in that
aspect. Al-Hariri's maqamat are proven to be superior to AlSarakusti'smaqamat in the dimension of narrative time as it is considered the
model while the latter is an imitation. Total number of retrievals and
anticipations in Al-Hariri's Maqamat is 36 while only 30 in Sarakusti's.
The study also shows that the movement in maqamatvaries between
slow and fast. The research tackled the four narrative movements those are:
omitting, posing, generalizing, and scenes as well as stating their functions
and how they serve the meaning. For example the omitting movement leads
to the accelerating of narrative that is when the writer wants to speed in time.
In the second part of this study,a severe complaint from the brutality of
time is evident. The study suggests that the reason behind it is the
deterioration of social, political and moral atmosphere during the time
maqamat were written. Those complaints manifest themselves in the form of
poetic lines normally towards the end of each maqama. Both collections
blame time for poverty, nomadic being, and the liability of their sins including
fraud, lying, or misleading. |
